A devil and her love song - Miyoshi Tomori
Summary: Maria's frank nature gains her enemies at her new school, but her angelic singing voice inadvertently catches the attention of Yusuke Kanda and Shin Meguro. Can these boys mend her hardened heart, or will they just end up getting scorched?

Maria's blunt nature and intolerance for hypocrisy make her the target of bullies at her new school, but two boys—prickly Shin and cheerful Kanda—each decide to be her friend despite what other students think. Tomori tweaks the "cute boy saves the lonely girl" plotline by making Maria a difficult person to like, resulting in a story with depth beneath a fluffy shojo facade. Maria is a fairly tragic character, unable to integrate easily with society and always dealing with assumptions that people make about her. As she says, "When you fall from grace once, you're a screw-up forever." Even though Shin and Kanda are only beginning to be developed in this first volume, it seems likely that they, too, each have their own troubles to face. Tomori's art has typical shojo elements—large eyes, cute boys, sailor uniforms—but Maria's deadpan love for adorably frilly clothes will likely lead to humorous moments in future volumes. A fine start to a not-too-long series (13 volumes) that will fit nicely in most teen collections. Copyright 2012 Booklist Reviews.

*Starred Review* Life is busy in nineteenth-century Central Asia for 20-year-old Amir as she settles into her new role as a bride and gets to know her 12-year-old husband, Karluk. But her happiness is threatened when her nomadic family decide they need her back, seeing a more profitable marriage arrangement. Mori's artistic skill and love for this time period are evident in every pen stroke of this lush hardcover manga. The highly detailed clothes, rugs, and woodwork of the Caucasus region are brought to vibrant life, encouraging readers to linger over the panels. A five-page fox hunt, told entirely through movements, immerses readers in the quiet attention of the highly tuned skills on display. By the end of this first volume, the plot is only beginning to bloom, but there is ample enjoyment in watching the small, everyday activities that make up the family's life—laundry, hunting, raising children. Amir's cheerfulness is infectious, both to her new family and to readers. There is some nudity, and the age difference between Amir and her husband might raise eyebrows, but the strong female characters and unique historical setting make this manga a terrific addition to teen or adult collections. The mystery of her origins is partially revealed in the final story: her father, Mr. Koiwai, found her and took her in, but Azuma seems to hint that there's more to be explained about Yotsuba. Koiwai sums up the reaction everyone seems to have to this little bundle of energy: "She can find happiness in anything," he says. "Nothing in this world can get her down." The plots here are little more than setups to explore everyday objects or concepts through the eyes of the irrepressible Yotsuba, but the genuinely sweet formula works, thanks to Azuma's solid storytelling and deft humor. In a fit of angry spontaneity, Daikichi decides to adopt her! But is living with an overgrown teenager who can barely take care of himself the key to making Rin come out of her shell?

Thirty-year-old Daikichi wasn't expecting to be a father. After his grandfather dies, he learns he has a six-year-old aunt, the daughter of his recently deceased grandfather and an unknown woman. The family quibbles on who will take care of Rin, and when it becomes clear that no one wants her, Daikichi offers himself. Some think that Rin's a slow girl because she's shy and doesn't talk much, but Daikichi senses something deeper. While at first quite lost on the matter of child rearing, he finds his way with the help of research and Rin herself as the two gradually become a family. The arrival of Rin's biological mother may change this, but for now aunt and nephew show how a unique family can make it work if love is involved. This sweet-natured manga shows the joys, frustrations, and quirks of family life; and while it is aimed at teens, it would also be more than welcome in the hands of adult readers. Scott Pilgrim is 23 years old, lives in a cold, unnamed Canadian town, plays bass in a band called Sex Bob-Omb and has a very cute 17-year-old Chinese-Canadian girlfriend, Knives Chau. His "precious little life" is amiably unstructured, and he drifts, happily unemployed, between band practice and time spent with Knives. His relationship with Knives is chaste-walks, chats and hugs-although Knives is getting bigger ideas. "We haven't even held hands," Scott explains. "It's just nice, you know." But then he starts having dreams about Ramona Flowers, a mysterious, equally cute and perfectly legal hipster chick on Rollerblades who delivers books for Amazon.com. Ramona is anything but simple, and O'Malley's tale of adorable slackers in love is transformed into a wildly magically manga-kung fu fantasy adventure. We meet the first of Ramona's seven evil ex-boyfriends, Matthew Patel, who challenges Scott and his band to a supernatural martial arts duel right out of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
